Does this Bull Look Familiar?

If you’ve been on the internet within the past week, it just might.

Just a few days ago under the cover of night, Polish-born artist and exhibitionist Olek decided to give a makeover to the famed Wall Street Bull by means of crochet  during an impromptu art-expo, pictured above.

Polite Graffiti

An artist who goes by “Finley” is covering city dumpsters with what she calls “polite graffiti.” Using donated wallpaper, she blankets the dumpsters to jazz up the otherwise unattractive objects. Finley hopes that others will copy her style. “I love when people take an idea and re-create it. That’s one of the great things about art– you can beg, borrow, and steal. There are no rights or copyrights. It’s all free,” she said.

Ex-Tower Records Will be Art Gallery

Once Tower Records, then the home to Brooklyn Flea’s Gifted pop-up shop, the empty space at Broadway and 4th Street will soon be taken over by No Longer Empty. An organization that brings art exhibits to vacant storefronts, No Longer Empty will launch at this location on Friday at 7pm with a music-themed show called “Never Say Goodbye.” The show will include a panel discussion of the music industry and performaces by the Metropolis Ensemble and Disco Monkeys. Running Wednesdays through Sundays from noon until 7pm, the exhibit will last until February 13th.

Five Free Things to do This Week

I come across the same nightly decision that you do. To go out into the city and try something new and exciting, or to curl up on my couch and watch bad reality TV. Obviously the first is more appealing, and it doesn’t drop your IQ five points. But on the other hand, Jon and Kate Plus 8 is free, as opposed to a cute Thai restaurant, or more dangerous for me, a sample sale extravaganza. I have scoured the city for some free things to do this week to save us all from reruns of “Flavor of Love” and “The Bachelorette.” And what do you know, they are all located near featured spaces for lease. Imagine that!
