The popular children’s show Sesame Street is celebrating its 40th birthday this week. In honor of the milestone, a temporary street sign was unveiled at the corner of 64th Street and Broadway, and November 10th was proclaimed “Sesame Street Day.” Birthday celebrators also have the chance to see the Sesame Street exhibit at Brooklyn Library’s Central Library with limited edition Elmo library cards, as well as view a display of historical items used on the show, like show scripts, sheet music, props, and photographs. The creator of the show Joan Ganz Cooney believes New York was the best location for the celebration saying, ”Sesame Street reaches children around the world, but without a doubt New York City is its home. It’s wonderful for the city to recognize where it all began.”
