Yoga has been taking over exercise routines for the past few years.  But more recently Ashtanga Yoga, otherwise known as “power yoga” is stretching to every corner of Manhattan. Celebrities like Parker Posey, Madonna, Sting, and Christy Turlington are fans of this fast paced, intense style. Ashtanga translates to “eight limbs” in Sanskirt, and is more difficult than other forms because of the constant movement from one pose to the next. Last night, the Empire State Building was lit up tie dye style to celebrate the upcoming Grateful Dead exhibit at the NY Historical Society. The psychedelic display brought color to the skyline. Take a look at these other hippie trends from yesterday’s article, “Psychedelic City.”

Over 120,000 fans, artists, filmmakers, and music industry pros from around the world will congregate today at the CMJ Marathon, a five-day music festival. The extravaganza will take over downtown Manhattan, with venues at New York University and other locations. Participants can attend music panels, films, and live music shows all week by purchasing a full-access badge, or paying per event.

The Cupcake Craze gets Crazier

redvelvetOwners of the Eldridge, a popular and ultra-trendy nightclub in the Lower East Side have a new project in mind, and of course, it involves cupcakes. The duo plans to open another lounge on the Lower East Side (smaller and not as exclusive) serving alcohol-laced cupcakes paired with a drink special. To take the dessert obsession even further, the tables will be designed to look like cake stands, and the club will be named “Red Velvet.” The team stresses that they want as many people as possible to share the experience, with no hassle from the bouncers at the door.
